Two different starting points for the zodiac
Both systems divide the sky into the same 12 signs of 30 degrees each. They disagree about where the first sign, Aries, begins.
- Western astrology is tropical. Aries starts at the spring equinox, the point where the Sun crosses the celestial equator each March. The zodiac is tied to the seasons.
- Vedic astrology is sidereal. Aries starts at a fixed point among the stars. The zodiac is tied to the constellations and the 27 nakshatras.
The gap is the ayanamsa
Because the Earth's axis slowly wobbles (precession), the equinox point drifts backwards against the stars by about one degree every 72 years. The two zodiacs lined up roughly 1,700 years ago; today they are about 24 degrees apart. That offset is called the ayanamsa. Different Vedic schools use slightly different values; KP uses the Krishnamurti ayanamsa, which is very close to the widely used Lahiri value.
Why your sign usually moves back one
Subtract about 24 degrees from a Western position to get the Vedic one. If your Western Sun is in the first 24 degrees of its sign, which is true for roughly four people in five, your Vedic Sun falls in the previous sign. Someone who is a Western Leo is most likely a Vedic Cancer. The same shift applies to the Moon, the Ascendant and every planet.
Which one is "right"?
They measure different things, so neither is simply wrong. Western astrology is built around the seasonal cycle and is mostly used for personality and psychology. Vedic astrology, and KP within it, is built around the star-based nakshatras and is mostly used for event prediction and timing, which is why its dasha system depends on the Moon's exact sidereal nakshatra.
Where KP fits
KP is a branch of Vedic astrology, so it uses the sidereal zodiac. It adds sub-lords, Placidus house cusps and a verdict-first way of answering specific questions. See KP Astrology vs Vedic Astrology for how KP differs from traditional Vedic technique.
FAQ
Why is my Vedic sign different from my Western sign?
Western astrology measures the zodiac from the spring equinox (tropical); Vedic astrology measures it from the fixed stars (sidereal). The two are now about 24 degrees apart, so for most people the Vedic Sun sign is one sign earlier than their Western one.
What is ayanamsa?
The ayanamsa is the angle between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs, currently about 24 degrees and growing by about one degree every 72 years. KP uses the Krishnamurti ayanamsa.
Does KP astrology use the Western or the Vedic zodiac?
KP uses the Vedic (sidereal) zodiac with the Krishnamurti ayanamsa, together with Placidus house cusps.
